Right in the heart of Wellington is Antrim House, built in 1904-05 for Robert Hannah, founder of Hannah's footwear company and one of the most successful businessmen of his time.
Antrim House had all the latest conveniences including gas, electric light and bathrooms, featuring kauri panelling and staircase, stained glass windows and ornate ceilings. In 1979 Antrim House was given to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, who use it as their headquarters. Though surrounded by high rise buildings, Atruim House still stands in its original gardens and grounds, with its original stables and conservatory buildings, and is now used for meetings and as offices.
Antrim House is open for visitors weekdays during normal office hours. Access is generally limited to the hallway and Hannah Room. The grounds and recently renovated Hannah Room are available for hire, and provide an ideal setting for small functions such as weddings and conferences.
