The Pencarrow Lighthouse was New Zealand's first permanent lighthouse and was run by New Zealand's only woman lighthouse-keeper, Mrs Bennett.
The cast iron tower, made in England, was erected on Pencarrow Head at the entrance to Wellington Harbour in 1859. Outside viewing is available at all times; access is via a narrow rocky track running off Pencarrow Coast Road, past Eastbourne.
Eastbourne is located 20 minutes drive from Downtown Wellington or 30 minutes aboard The Dominion Post Ferry.
