The Thames School of Mines & Mineralogical Museum was the largest of some 30 schools formed in the 1880s to assist goldminers working on the goldfields in NZ.

The school closed in 1954, but the mineralogical museum remained open to the public.

The NZ Historic Places Trust acquired the complex in 1979.

Open daily 11.00 - 4.00pm November - April, and 11.00 - 3.00pm May - October.
