The Whangarei Art Museum acts as the public art gallery for the Whangarei region. It is also Northland's only public gallery, and displays works from New Zealand and international artists.
The museum's mission is to acknowledge, preserve and showcase the visual arts history of the Whangarei region, focusing on its place in the Pacific and bicultural heritage. The Museum's collection embraces heritage and contemporary art including ceramics, sculptures, paintings and installation works by both local and nationally celebrated artists.
Exhibitions at the Whangarei Art Museum include both internally and national touring exhibitions which showcase the full diverse creative practice of Northland and New Zealand. Art works displayed include a huge range of mediums, from carved gourds, photography and weaving, to oil paintings, ceramics and glass sculpture.
