One of New Zealand's premier cultural and heritage attractions, Shantytown is a restored replica of an 1860's West Coast gold mining town. Situated approximately 10km south of Greymouth, Shantytown is a living monument to the hardy pioneers who forded the wild rivers and streams, scrambling through the rugged subtropical rainforest in search of their fortunes.
Shantytown gives you the chance to step back in time and experience an historical train ride and a working gold claim where you can successfully pan for gold.
With over 30 historic buildings for the visitor to wander through, Shantytown gives you a 'real' sense of what it was like to live 'then' with the Chinese diggers and wild colonial boys. All tickets include a Steam Train Ride through lush native rain forest along an original sawmill tram track of the 1800's. This is one experience that you must do.
