Lyttelton Harbour is home to two islands, each with an incredible link to Canterbury's past. Quail Island is perfect for a half day freedom walk. The island's pathway passes by shipwrecks, a former leper colony and a quarantine station used by the early European settlers. Today the island is home to native birds including the fantail, kingfisher, silvereye and many sea birds.
Close to shore is Ripapa Island. Originally a Maori pa, before becoming home to Fort Jervois, built in 1860 to repel the 'Great Russian scare'. The island was then transformed to a prisoner of war camp and housed the famous Count Felix Von Luckner. Guided tours can take you back in time to explore this historic island.
