Whakarewarewa - or Whakarewarewatanga - The Thermal Village is located in Rotorua, set in a landscape of geothermal activity, hot thermal springs and hot bubbling mud pools. The village allows visitors to witness its natural beauty discover the unique lifestyle and traditions of Maori culture, by the people of Tuhourangi/ Ngati Wahiao.
The people of Tuhourangi/ Ngati Wahiao welcome visitors to join them in song a dance, and learn about their beautiful culture, including how to prepare and cook food using natural steam vents, and the mineral springs where the villagers bathe.
'Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao' is the full name of the village, meaning 'The uprising of the warriors (war party) of Wahiao'. Wahiao was a Warrior Chief of the Tuhourangi Tribe.
