The Royal Albatross Centre provides tours to the world's only mainland albatross colony.

The Royal Albatross is one of the largest birds in the world, having a three metre wingspan. Taiaroa head is the only place in the world where these birds come ashore to breed.

The breeding season begins in September and October with the eggs being laid in late November. The chicks hatch in late January and remain at the headland until they and their parents leave together in September.

The albatross tour is very informative and will leave you with a deep and profound respect for these giants of the sky.
