Experience the fall out from New Zealand's greatest natural disaster. The Buried Village is the excavated site of an 1880's village called TeWairoa. Sadly 150 lives were lost when Mount Tarawera unexpectedly and violently erupted causing hot ash and mud to rain down on this once peaceful village.
Today, more than 120 years later, visitors to the site can relive the experience of the devastation and chaos of that terrible night which destroyed the eighth wonder of the world, the breath-taking pink and white terraces.
