Kaikoura is known as one of New Zealand's finest eco-tourism destinations. Eco tourism is the backbone of this small seaside town - with most businesses in Kaikoura relying on the tourists who flock to the area to experience the area's diverse marine life.
Part of the Southern Whale Sanctuary, Kaikoura is world renowned for its whale watching and dolphin swimming, and also provides opportunities for seal swimming, bird watching and cultural tours.
Dolphin Swimming: Dusky Dolphins are prevalent in the waters around Kaikoura, and a number of tour operators offer the chance to get up-close and personal to these aquatic acrobats. Dolphin swimming is a popular choice, but dolphin viewing is also an option - by air or boat.
Whale Watching: Whale Watching is the other big draw card for Kaikoura. The local Maori tribe (Ngai Tahu) are descendents of the ancestor Paikea (the Whale Rider), so the prevalence of Sperm Whales in this area is apt. Kaikoura is part of the Southern Whale Sanctuary meaning Sperm Whales are common. Aerial and boat whale watch operators offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these spectacular creatures in their natural environment.
Bird Watching: Kaikoura is one of the world's best locations for viewing pelagic (ocean going) birds. The opportunity to view the majestic Great Albatross is particularly popular - with other species including Banded Albatross, Shearwater, Petrels, Prions, and Shags.
Seal Swimming: Kaikoura's rocky coastal shoreline is home to large colonies of New Zealand Fur Seals. These furry critters spend their days hunting in the vast Kaikoura waters, and return to the mainland to rest and rear pups. A number of tour operators offer unique opportunities to snorkel with these fascinating animals - whilst ensuring their natural habitat is not disturbed.
Maori Tours: Kaikoura has been inhabited by the Ngati Kuri (a sub-tribe of the South Island's Ngai Tahu people) for 800 - 900 years. Maori Tours Kaikoura, run by Heather and Maurice Manawatu, gives visitors the chance to learn about the traditions and history of the Ngati Kuri whilst on a small, personal tour. Learn about the ancestors of Paikea - the Whale Rider - and visit sites of cultural and environmental significance to local Maori.
