Kaikoura, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, lies within the Southern Hemisphere Whale Sanctuary and is a world-renowned whale watching location.
Several species of whale can be viewed in Kaikoura, but the mighty Sperm Whale is the most prevalent species - offering ample opportunity to view these majestic animals in all their glory.
Diving to depths of one kilometre, flukes can be seen as the whales prepare to start their deep dive. Kaikoura, with its rich population of sea life, is the perfect location for sperm whales to build up their strength before venturing north for mating.
A number of operators provide whale watching opportunities - by boat or air. Aerial whale watching affords an opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their entirety, as they approach the surface for air and prepare to dive for giant squid and groper.
Boat whale watching gives you the opportunity to get closer to these amazing creatures, and also experience some of Kaikoura's other famed marine life - New Zealand Fur Seals, Dusky Dolphins, Albatross and the occasional Orca or Pilot Whale.
