Kaikoura is a world-renowned eco-tourism location, particularly noted as one of the best locations in the world to swim with dolphins.
The predominant dolphin species here is the Dusky Dolphin, which is also found off the east and west coasts of southern South America. Dusky Dolphin's are highly sociable animals, and pods of over 1000 can be found in the Kaikoura region.
During the summer months, Dusky Dolphins are found close to the Kaikoura shoreline, and during the winter they inhabit waters further from the coast. A number of tour companies operate year-round dolphin swimming and viewing, and are able to locate the various pods.
During the spring in Kaikoura (September to December) Dusky Dolphin calves are born - so this is a great time to experience newborn Duskies in their natural environment.
The most acrobatic of all dolphin species, Dusky Dolphins regularly put on shows of leaping, back flips, and side slaps - guaranteeing sightseers a memorable dolphin viewing experience!
Swimming with Dusky Dolphins is a truly unique experience, and a must for any eco-tourism or marine fan.
