Getting to the Coromandel

The Coromandel lies between Auckland and the Bay of Plenty, on the North Island's northwest coast. It is around 90 minutes drive from Auckland, Rotorua and Tauranga and is one of New Zealand's most popular holiday destinations.

BY ROAD:

AUCKLAND TO THAMES: Take the Southern Motorway for roughly 50kms south of Auckland. Take the off ramp onto State Highway 2 and follow for 35kms. At State Highway 25 turn left and follow for roughly 30kms.

AUCKLAND TO COROMANDEL TOWN: Follow the Southern Motorway for 50kms south of Auckland. Take the off ramp onto State Highway 2 and follow for 35kms. At State Highway 25 turn left and follow for roughly 30kms to Thames. Follow State Highway 25 (Thames Coast Road) for approximately 55kms to Coromandel Township.

AUCKLAND TO WHITIANGA: Take the Southern Motorway for 50kms south of Auckland. Take the off ramp onto State Highway 2 and follow for 35kms. At State Highway 25 turn left and follow for 25kms. At Kopu turn right onto the Ngati Maru Highway, and then turn left onto Kopu Hikuai Road. Follow this road for roughly 28kms. Turn left onto Tairua Road and continue on this road to Whitianga.

AUCKLAND TO WHANGAMATA: Take the Southern Motorway out of the city, and follow for around 50kms south. Take the off ramp onto State Highway 2 and follow for 35kms. At State Highway 25 turn left and follow for 25kms. At Kopu turn right onto the Ngati Maru Highway, and then turn left onto Kopu Hikuai Road. Follow Kopu Hikuai Road for 28kms, before turning right onto Tairua Road. Follow Tairua Road for 24kms into Whangamata.

AUCKLAND TO PAEROA: Follow the Southern Motorway for roughly 50kms south of Auckland. Take the off ramp onto State Highway 2 and follow for 72kms into Paeroa.

BY COACH: Intercity Coachlines have regular services to Thames, Coromandel , Paeroa, Whangamata and Whitianga. Shuttle services are provided by a number of operators, including Aotearoa Tours and Coromandel Discovery.
