Toihoukura Visual Art & Design School

Toihoukura, the Visual Art and Design School at Tairawhiti Polytechnic, is a nationally renowned art school specialising in traditional and contemporary Maori art and design.

The Toihoukura Art Gallery gives the public an opportunity to view and purchase stunning original works by the school's talented students and tutors.

Maori art forms taught at Toihoukura include traditional Maori design, Ta Moko (Maori Tattoo), Waiata (song), Kapa Haka (dance), Môteatea (tribal songs), and contemporary art.

With an emphasis on Manaakitanga (cultutral customs and hospitality) students at Toihoukura are exposed to a holistic approach to Maori art and culture.

One of New Zealand's premiere contemporary Maori artists - Derek Lardelli - is principal tutor at the school, ensuring the highest standards.
