For a unique architectural experience, the port town of Omaru is unrivalled. Nestled around a scenic harbour on the south islands east coast, the old part of the town is filled whitestone architecture, buildings constructed from locally quarried limestone. Like many towns in New Zealand, Oamaru has nurtured its heritage and treasures the handsome natural environment in which it is set.
Oamaru prospered throughout the 19th century as a gold and timber milling town, with the harbour playing an important role. The rural areas surrounding the town produced grain and wool which were transported by boat to larger cities and overseas.
The harbour at Oamaru is also home to a colony of the adorable blue penguins that can be viewed as they return to their nests from their daily feeding trip. They gather in the water around sunset to cross the beach, providing a chance for visitors to photograph these wee cuties.
The Tyne Historic Precinct is a fascinating area to take a stroll. Locals in Victorian dress, or even riding an old world penny-farthing pushbike are not unusual here. The restored whitestone buildings house a range of shops and services. Visitors can shop for interesting crafts and antiques, enjoy a break at a cafe or restaurant or just relax in a different setting.Photos
