A spectacular 40min drive out of Queenstown, at the corner of Lake Wakatipu, is the small resort town of Glenorchy. This rustic town is the gateway to internationally renowned walking and hiking tracks, and is on the edge of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area.
This region experiences the country’s hottest, coldest and driest weather. Summers are based around the magnificent Lake Wakatipu; kayaking, swimming and sailing. Autumn is very colourful as the decidous trees prepare for winter. Winters are all about snow; heli-skiing, snowboarding and relaxing in warm comfort afterwards. In Spring, the wildflowers are in full bloom.
The neighbouring snow-capped mountains and towering beech forests were used in scenes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as was the adjacent Dart Valley and Dart River.
A regular shuttle bus service is available between Queenstown and Glenorchy. You can also reach Glenorchy by light aircraft or helicopter.Photos
