Arrowtown is a 'living museum', just 25 minutes drive from Queenstown. On the banks of the Arrow River, Arrowtown was the scene of a major gold rush in the 19th century; swelling the town’s population to 7,000. The centre of town has been lovingly restored featuring more than 60, 19th century buildings in great condition. The Chinese miner’s village on the town’s outskirts is a great place to visit.

A stroll around the town will reveal a surprising number of restaurants and cafes tucked into the beautifully restored buildings, where you can enjoy local produce. Arrowtown has a funky selection of shopping in Buckingham Street.

The picturesque streets of Arrowtown, 21 km northeast of Queenstown, turn a golden glow in autumn as the deciduous trees which line them put on a wonderful seasonal show. Gold was also responsible for the town's establishment when prospector William Fox found the precious metal near by in 1862.
