Manapouri has long been known as a base for the exploration of nearby Doubtful Sound, New Zealand’s deepest fiord, and is now attracting it’s own nature loving visitors.
You will find the little town at the limits of the Fiordlands National Park, sitting on the edge of Lake Manapouri, NZ's 2nd deepest lake. The lake covers 34 islands in the 150sq km, with kayaks or sailboats available for exploring.
The Circle, Kepler and Dusty tracks are popular local walking and hiking routes in the Manapouri area, which can be done with or without a tour guide/group. Manapouri was named by early Maori as Roto-ua (the rainy lake), and later as Moturau (many islands).
Lake Manapouri was the centre of controversy in 1968 after the proposed raising of the lake for the power scheme, it became New Zealand's symbol for the country's environmental movement.Photos
