Clyde is nestled among the rugged tors and the sub-alpine landscape of Central Otago. The historic centre of the old gold mining town lies at the entrance of the Cromwell Gorge carved out by the mighty Clutha River. A short distance to the south is Alexandra, the commercial hub of Central Otago.

It is a region of great contrasts reflecting the four seasons. The blossom and wild thyme flowers of spring, the searing heat and aridness of summer, the sublime and stunning colours of autumn, and the bitter cold and frosts of winter.

Buildings of note, dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, include several stone cottages, a stone hotel, the town hall, church, post office, council chambers and several museums - the Vincent County and Dunstan Goldfields Historical Museum, the Stationary Engine Museum and the Briar Herb Factory Museum. The herb factory operated in the 1930s, processing local thyme that grows wild on the hills, while the goldfields museum was begun in 1879 with a collection donated by the local goldfields administrator.
