Westport is a good centre to base oneself for outdoor adventures… kayaking, jet boating, caving, white water & underground rafting.

Not only was this town another original gold mining settlement but is was also a coal mining town. Westport is the main town at the Northern end of the West Coast with a population of 4850, a good range of shops and services and plentiful accommodation.

15 kms away at nearby Cape Foulwind, there is a seal colony. There can be up to 100 New Zealand fur seals in the sheltered waters of Tauranga Bay during mating and birthing seasons. Pups are born from late November through to early summer. Cape Foulwind Walkway is a 4km or 90 minute walk along the coast past the seal colony.
