The elongated West Coast region extends from Karamea in the north to Jackson Bay in the south and is somewhat isolated by the Southern Alps. The 31,000 residents are known as 'Coasters' and are reknowned for their hospitality and friendliness. The Coasters have developed a rich, self-sufficient and pioneering culture unique to this area.
The West Coast is the only source of 'greenstone' or New Zealand jade in the world. Also known as pounamu in Maori, it is a semi-precious stone of cultural importance to the Maori people.
This is New Zealand's wild side, known for its natural beauty and dominated by cascading rivers, rainforests, glaciers and geological treasures. Maori legends and stories are abundant throughout this untamed landscape.Photos
