Twizel is a young service town, constructed in 1968, to support the nearby hydroelectric power station. If it were up to the Government of the day, the town would have perished once construction of the power station was complete, however the residents were prepared to fight for the survival of the town; and so it is today.

The small population trebles with tourists during the summer months who enjoy the close proximity to Mt Cook, only a 45 minute drive away, and Lake Pukaki. The treeless landscape of the Mackenzie Basin has been reformed and the locals now call Twizel the 'town of trees'.
