New Brighton is a sleepy seaside suburb, approximately 15 minutes drive east of the Christchurch CBD. New Brighton was originally a small seaside village, but as Christchurch city expanded eastward it was swallowed up as an outer suburb.

New Brighton is well known for its 300 metre pier – which opened to the public on the 1st of November 1997. The pier is a magnificent location for a photo opportunity, and also plays host to many events throughout the year – including a spectacular free fireworks display every Guy Fawkes.

As well as the pier, New Brighton boasts a modern child-enthralling library, children’s play area and pool, sandy swimming beaches, cafes and shops. It is also a great surf spot, with the beach stretching north for 18kms to the mouth of the Waimakariri River.

At the northern end of New Brighton you will find Bottle Lake Forest – a recreation area which includes a purpose built mountain bike track, picnic areas and walking trails.

South New Brighton is famed as the migratory area of the Godwits – small birds which migrate to Alaska every year for the northern summer. Hundreds of locals turn out every March to farewell the Godwits on their mammoth journey – with the bells of Christchurch Cathedral being rung to celebrate the final birds departure.
