New Brighton is a sleepy seaside suburb, approximately 15 minutes drive east of the Christchurch CBD. New Brighton was originally a small seaside village, but as Christchurch city expanded eastward it was swallowed up as an outer suburb.

New Brighton is well known for its 300 metre pier which opened to the public on the 1st of November 1997. The pier is a magnificent location for a photo opportunity, and also plays host to many events throughout the year including a spectacular free fireworks display every Guy Fawkes.

As well as the pier, New Brighton boasts a modern child-enthralling library, childrens play area and pool, sandy swimming beaches, cafes and shops. It is also a great surf spot, with the beach stretching north for 18kms to the mouth of the Waimakariri River.

At the northern end of New Brighton you will find Bottle Lake Forest a recreation area which includes a purpose built mountain bike track, picnic areas and walking trails.

South New Brighton is famed as the migratory area of the Godwits small birds which migrate to Alaska every year for the northern summer. Hundreds of locals turn out every March to farewell the Godwits on their mammoth journey with the bells of Christchurch Cathedral being rung to celebrate the final birds departure.
