Lyttelton is tough and muscular town. Not pretty like Akaroa, it's a town used to working hard for its living handling Canterbury’s imports and exports. And the legacy of this history is evident today as you wander the steep and tiny streets.

You’ll see the pubs where seamen spent their time while their ships were laboriously loaded by hand and the original homes to many of Christchurch’s first settlers. It is now a lively place to live, or do business, with eclectic and colourful cafes and bars which add a vibrancy and energy not found through the tunnel on the flat land.

Lyttelton’s became Canterbury’s main port when the Lyttelton rail tunnel opened in 1867. The astonishing tunnel was the first tunnel in the world to cut through the wall of an extinct volcano. Many of Canterbury’s exports and imports still pass through it.

Just 15 minutes from Christchurch, you will enter a different world, a port town, cradled by rugged hills, looking across the broad waters of Lyttelton Harbour to the highest peaks of Banks Peninsula. It's a world apart from the city of the plains.
