Known as the 'riviera' of Christchurch, Akaroa is an historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano.

In 1840, French settlers arrived at Akaroa, just after it had been claimed by the English under the Treaty of Waitangi. It is the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. Many streets have French names, and many of the residents are descendants of the original French families in Akaroa.

Akaroa means 'Long Harbour' in Maori: its bays and cobalt blue waters make it popular with local and international tourists. Jump in and see the rare Hector's dolphin, and an array of birdlife, or stay on shore and soak up the sun.
