Halfway between Christchurch and Picton, where the mountains meet the sea, lays the beautiful seaside settlement of Kaikoura.

Only 3hrs drive north of Christchurch - with hours of sunshine each day, countless whales, dolphins and seals; Kaikoura is a haven for travellers.

According to Maori legend, Maui placed his foot on the Kaikoura peninsula to steady himself while he 'fished-up' the North Island. In Maori, Kaikoura means 'to eat crayfish' be sure to pause at a local restaurant to enjoy this delicacy.

Gateway to the Southern Ocean's Marine Mammal Sanctuary, Kaikoura is one of the rare places where you can see whales, dolphins, seals, albatross, penguins and many species of pelagic ocean birds in a single day.
