Hanmer Springs is where you will find the thermal pools that were recently anointed the 'Best Visitor Attraction' in New Zealand by NZ Tourism (2004-05). The small town is famous for the thermal reserve, which has been soaking and soothing bodies for more than 100 years. In Maori legend the thermal springs are a piece of the fires of Tamatea that fell from the sky after the eruption of Mt Ngauruhoe on the North Island.

The town itself also caters for those seeking more physical activity, including horse treks, rafting, forest walks, fishing, jet-boating and skiing. Hamner Springs is a popular weekend getaway for people living in Christchurch.
