Despite its reputation for chilly winds, Wellington can seduce the most cynical visitor with its natural charm. Great views can be found at the top of Mt Victoria, or by catching the cable car up to the Botanic Gardens. Downtown Wellington's urban pulse, unrivalled in the country, beats hard and fast. The city is ideally explored on foot, perfect for browsing its boutique shops and sampling its fine dining and artistic pursuits.
The site of the national Parliament and the copper-domed Cabinet offices, known as the Beehive, Wellington is also a vibrant cultural centre. Here you’ll find the Te Papa, the ground-breaking interactive Museum of New Zealand, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and national treasures such as the original Treaty of Waitangi and the childhood house of one of the country’s finest authors, Katherine Mansfield.
The central city is the place to see performing arts, particularly ballet, theatre and music. Local cuisine is sophisticated and inventive - an abundance of excellent cafes and restaurants are within walking distance of all the major hotels. The waterfront has been transformed into a graceful promenade with shops, restaurants, activities and elegant landscaping, making it a drawcard for visitors and locals alike. I agree, visited Wellington for holidays for years, before living there for 10 yrs, live only an hour away, and always enjoy going into the city, plenty to do and the waterfront walks are great. The CBD is compact and is easy to walk to where you want to go, quicker than driving, or busing..
