Historic Greytown was settled as a farming district and today still produces fruit and vegetables of the highest quality. The local produce features on the menus of local cafes and restaurants. New Zealand's first planned inland town, Greytown was established on land purchased from the Maori in 1853. The area's rich river flats and silty soil were perfect for affordable small-scale farming.

The beautiful rural setting is still evident and the town's rustic charm is enhanced by its main street, lined with some of New Zealand's finest Victorian colonial architecture. Some of the original and fully restored wooden buildings house cafes, restaurants and shops. The local museum is a relaxed place to learn about the area, it's people and history, and is part of a local heritage walk.
