Inland from New Plymouth the town of Stratford is the gateway to the area’s two national parks – Egmont, dominated by spectacular Mt Taranaki, and the Whanganui National Park with its vast areas of virgin rainforest and many walkways. On a fine day you can see the North Island’s highest peak, Mt Ruapehu, in the distance. The view of Mt Taranaki from here (facing west), showcases the superb sight of the Fanthams Peak.

The town is named after Shakespeare’s home, Stratford-upon-Avon, and takes many of its street names, 67 in all, from characters in the Bard’s plays. A glockenspiel clock tower in the main street plays daily at 10am, 1pm and 3pm. The town’s other notable attraction is the Taranaki Pioneer Village, an outdoor museum that tells the Taranaki story in a park-like setting of 35 historic buildings on 6ha.

Stratford is en route to bigger natural wonders, but the area has plenty of short and long walks that take in glow-worm caves, waterfalls and lush bushland. The surrounding foothills of the mountains are also superb for bike riding and four-wheel driving.
