Palmerston North provides an entertaining mix of urban excitement and a laid-back country vibe. You can experience the buzzing city life with plenty of arts and culture, antique shops, lively cafes, restaurants and bars, or enjoy a more rural approach staying at the farms of the Rangitikei that are known for their friendly hospitality.
Tour operators offer jet boating along the Manawatu River, and kayaking in the gorge; the Rangitikei provides thrills with bungy jumping and rafting. You can also drive the Manfield racetrack.
The region is a major agricultural farming area of New Zealand, and there are many farmstays to choose from, allowing visitors to experience life on a farm and some great home-style country cuisine.
Palmerston North is also the home of Massey University, the Manawatu Museum and the National Rugby Museum. The city is also a centre for the armed services and houses the Waiouru Army Museum.Photos
