Loacted at the southern tip of Lake Taupo, this is the ideal holiday destination for freshwater fishing enthusiasts. Known widely as New Zealand's unofficial trout fishing headquarters, Turangi has a long history of fishing and fish tourism.

According to Maori history, the first inhabitants of the area were the great priest Ngatoroirangi, the chief Tia, and their people, who arrived around the 14th century. There are various legends to explain the formation of Lake Taupo and the surrounding volcanic peaks.

Europeans arrived in the area about 1840, creating a couple of towns and farming. In 1885, brown trout were released into rivers, streams and lakes throughout the hinterland. Rainbow trout stocks were released in 1898 and over the following years, stocks were monitored to gauge the success of the release. The stocks were never in doubt: by the 1900s fish weighing up to 9kg were regularly caught in local rivers.

Since then, the Department of Conservation has been managing fish breeding programs in the region, opening the Tongariro Trout Centre hatchery with great success. Fish roe from the Turangi region is now being supplied to other parts of the country.

Turangi has now established itself as a premium destination for fishing enthusiasts. Unlike lakes, rivers and streams in many parts of NZ, Lake Taupo and its tributaries are open for fishing all year. Visit the local information centre for advice on where to fish, and any guidelines you should follow.
