In the northeast corner of Lake Taupo, the town of Taupo is surrounded by the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park. Once known as a city, Taupo is now a 'district', encompassing the town and surrounding hinterland.
The volcanic landscape is ideal for extreme sports, from mountain biking and skiing to bungy jumping. The Taupo region is home to NZ's first mountain board terrain park. You can even ski on an active volcano; Mt Ruapehu is home to the country's two largest ski fields, Turoa and Whakapapa.
The town offers great panoramic views south over Lake Taupo and nearby Mt Ruapehu; both recreational hot spots:
Mt Ruapehu, an active volcano, has fantastic snow cover beyond the standard snow season, perfect for all skiing enthusiasts. The slopes open annually in July, with a mantle of snow remaining on Mt Ruapehu into early spring. This is a great time to zoom down the slopes; enjoying the views without the crowds under crisp blue skies. Even out of snow season the mountain provides plenty of slopes to whizz down, no matter what your mode of transport.Photos

If you like modern exciting towns that are really set up for our overseas visitors then this is the place to visit. Mountains, lake, rivers, shopping, tramping, skydiving - fishing is the reason we visit Taupo, the awesome lake and rainbow and brown trout - nothing nicer than a tranquil morning...
