Whakatane and district lies in the coastal heart of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The township of approximately 17,000 is surrounded by fertile rural land and is flanked by wide ocean beaches and a beautiful river-mouth boat harbour.
With a moderate year-round climate, Whakatane is a great place for all kinds of watersports, whether it be diving, kayaking, jet-boating or windsurfing.
To the north lies White (Whakaari) Island, one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world. It has intense thermal activity with steam, natural gas vents and boiling pools.
