Napier, the main city of the region, has one of the largest concentrations of art deco buildings in the world. It was razed by earthquake and fire in 1931, and rebuilt in the art deco style fashionable at the time. The Art Deco Walk is a permanent attraction, and each February there is the Brebner Print Art Deco Weekend, a not-too-serious celebration of the style.

Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco - in such a concentrated area. And Napier's Art Deco is unique, with Maori motifs and the buildings of Louis Hay, admirer of the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

Napier has an abundance of accommodation, from backpackers and caravan parks to upmarket hotels. Close to the black sand shores there are many fine restaurants, pubs and cafes, which are abuzz on the weekend.
