Situated north of Wairoa, the Mahia Peninsula is a 374ha reserve and one of the last large tracts of lowland coastal forest remaining on the east coast. A 3.5km loop track (1.5-2 hours) takes walkers through different types of native vegetation.

Mahia Beach is a delightful holiday village with great fishing, surfing and diving, as well as safe swimming beaches and a nine-hole golf course. An excellent range of accommodation is available, which makes it an ideal spot for a coastal getaway.

Inland from Mahia is the quiet town of Morere, a renowned hot spring site. The springs are set in native forest through which there is a series of excellent walking tracks.
