Built around the beautiful Waikato River, Hamilton is in the Waikato Region of the North Island, approx 130km south of Auckland. The city has a bustling retail precinct and vibrant entertainment scene, thanks in part to its large student population.

The city proudly features many beautiful gardens, which come to life with masses of flowers in spring; in autumn it's the turning colour of the leaves that catch your eye. Hamilton Gardens are famous for the extensive and varied collections of plants.

Visit monuments in the area. Learn about fierce battles fought here in the mid-19th century during the Maori Land Wars. Abseil into a sink hole or explore the vast network of underground caves. The surrounding pastoral lands hide a massive network of underground caves and sink holes, carved by the action of underground rivers and springs against the limestone.

Visitors to Hamilton can spend a leisurely afternoon at the Waikato Museum of Contemporary Art and History, learning about the area's past. Native birds can be observed in the giant free-flight walk-through aviary of the local zoo.
