If you have ever dreamt of digging a hole on the beach and burying yourself in hot sand, Whitianga is the place to visit. This town is famous for its Hot Water Beach - where you can dig yourself a hole in the sand and bathe in the hot springs for two hours each side of low tide.

Whitianga is Mercury Bay's main town, located on the east coast of the Coromandel. Maori explorer Kupe first settled here around 950AD. The surrounding beaches are perfect for water sports or simply lazing around in the magnificently blue waters. Words such as 'picturesque, immaculate' and 'simply stunning' are often used to describe this part of the Coromandel.
