Located 28 kilometres west of Auckland, Piha is Auckland’s most famed beach and popular day-trip location. The wild west coast is known for its black sand and unrelenting swells – meaning Piha, though beautiful, is often very dangerous. It is recommended swimmers always swim between the flags when surf life savers are patrolling the beach.
A feature of Piha is Lion Rock – the huge natural rock formation that dominates the waters edge. Lion Rock was once a Maori pa site, and today it can be ascended via a small pathway. At the top you will enjoy stunning views of Piha and the Waitakere Ranges.
Piha is one of New Zealand’s top surf spots, with many national and international competitions held annually.
A great location for a day out, during the summer Piha swells with visitors, who flock to enjoy the BBQ and picnic facilities, and west coast waters.Photos
