Two pilots operating a Qantas flight made a gross miscalculation of the plane's weight and then failed to follow procedure when warned of a stall, a report has found.
The errors put the regional Australian flight into the position where the plane could have dropped from the sky, news.com.au reports.
One pilot entered the Boeing 717's weight but was out by nearly 10 tonnes. The mistake, which was missed by the co-pilot, caused two "stick shaker activations" in the cockpit, which warn of an impending stall.
The incident occurred on a regional flight carrying more than 100 passengers.
A report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau found the pilots attributed the stick shaker vibrations to turbulence and didn’t follow the prescribed procedure.
"In response to the stick shaker activations, the flight crew did not follow the prescribed stall recovery procedure and did not perform an immediate go around [aborted landing]," investigators said.
The activations were caused mainly by an incorrect approach speed due to the incorrect weight entered.
The bureau found several organisational issues that could potentially "adversely affect the safety of future operations".
QantasLink is operated by Cobham Aviation, which leases aircraft and crew to the Qantas Group.

Very scary. Tried contacting Qantas for clarity as I was about to book flights with them...no answer from emails ...perhaps I should choose another airline and one that will stay in the sky!
